Triangle Pose

Trikonasana

What is Triangle Pose?

Triangle Pose is a standing pose that lengthens the spine, opens up the hips, and stretches the entire side body. It’s a calming, grounding posture that also builds strength in your legs, core, and shoulders. With the chest wide open, Triangle Pose is a wonderful heart-opener too.

How to Do Triangle Pose

  1. Start with your feet wide apart (about 3-4 feet) and turn one foot out 90 degrees, keeping the other foot angled slightly in.

  2. Extend your arms out to the sides at shoulder height, with palms facing down.

  3. Inhale to lengthen your spine, then exhale and reach forward over your front leg, keeping your side body long.

  4. Bring your front hand down to your shin, ankle, or the floor (whatever feels comfortable).

  5. Extend your other arm up toward the ceiling, stacking your shoulders and opening your chest.

  6. Turn your gaze upward if it feels okay on your neck; otherwise, keep your head neutral.

Finding Grounding and Stability

In Triangle Pose, root down through your feet to feel stable and connected to the ground. The more grounded your lower body, the easier it is to open your chest and lengthen your spine.

Tips for Triangle Pose

  • Keep a micro-bend in your front knee to avoid locking it.

  • Engage your core to help stabilize and protect your lower back.

  • Focus on lengthening through the spine rather than reaching too low. It’s about creating space, not forcing depth.

Benefits of Triangle Pose

Triangle Pose stretches the legs, hips, and side body, strengthens the core, and opens the chest and shoulders. It helps improve balance, posture, and flexibility. With its calming effects, it’s a wonderful pose to help reduce stress and bring focus.

Next time you practice Triangle Pose, think about length and stability. Let this pose ground and stretch you at the same time. Give it a try, and feel free to reach out with any questions!
