What is Airplane Pose?

Airplane Pose is a standing balance posture that challenges your core, legs, and stability. In this pose, you balance on one leg, extend your other leg back, and open your chest forward with your arms out to the sides like airplane wings. It’s energizing and feels amazing once you find your balance.

How to Do Airplane Pose

  1. Start in Mountain Pose (standing tall at the top of your mat).

  2. Shift your weight to one foot and start to lift your opposite leg straight back.

  3. Lean your torso forward so that it’s parallel with the floor, or as close as feels comfortable. Keep your lifted leg in line with your body.

  4. Extend your arms out to the sides like airplane wings, keeping them strong and steady.

  5. Engage your core to help with balance, and keep your gaze slightly forward to help you focus.

Finding Your Balance

Balancing on one leg can be tricky, especially if you’re just starting out with Airplane Pose. Try rooting down through the standing leg, pressing firmly into the ground to find stability. If you feel wobbly, it’s okay! Balance improves with practice, so just have fun with it.

Engaging in Flight

Once you’re balanced, really extend through your lifted leg and reach through your fingertips. This action helps lengthen the body and makes the pose feel light and free. Keep your hips squared to the mat to stay aligned.

Tips for Airplane Pose

  • Keep a micro-bend in your standing knee to avoid locking it out.

  • Focus your gaze on the floor makes it a little easier to help you balance.

  • Engage your core and glutes to stay steady and strong in the pose.
