Crescent Lunge Pose

Anjaneyasana

What is Crescent Lunge Pose?

Crescent Lunge is a powerful, standing pose that strengthens your legs, core, and arms, while opening up the chest and stretching the hips. It’s a great go-to for building stability and grounding, and it’s also beginner-friendly with a few adjustments.

How to Do Crescent Lunge

  1. Start in Mountain Pose (standing tall at the top of your mat).

  2. Step one foot back about 3-4 feet, keeping your toes pointing forward.

  3. Bend your front knee so it’s stacked over your ankle, aiming for a 90-degree angle. Keep your back leg strong and lifted.

  4. Press onto the ball of your back foot, keeping your heel lifted.

  5. Square your hips forward as much as possible, engaging your core for stability.

  6. Reach your arms up overhead, with palms facing each other or even touching.

  7. Lift through your chest while keeping your shoulders relaxed. Gaze forward, or if you’re comfortable, look up toward your hands.

Grounding in Crescent Lunge

Feel the grounding action in both legs. Your front foot should be firm on the mat, while your back leg stays strong and straight. This base helps you balance and find strength in the pose.

Opening the Chest and Heart

As you reach up through your arms, lift through the chest without arching the lower back too much. This heart-opening action is energizing and makes Crescent Lunge a pose that feels powerful and uplifting.

Tips for Crescent Lunge

  • Keep your core engaged to help stabilize your body and protect the lower back.

  • Bend deeper into the front knee for a greater challenge, but make sure your knee stays over your ankle.

  • Take it slow with your balance. If you feel wobbly, step your feet wider apart to create a more stable base.

Benefits of Crescent Lunge

Crescent Lunge strengthens the legs, opens the hips, and stretches the chest and shoulders. It’s a great way to boost your energy and improve focus, thanks to the balance required. And since it’s a heart-opener, it’s perfect for adding a little confidence and positivity to your practice.
