Warrior 1 Pose
Virabhadrasana
What is Warrior 1?
Warrior 1 is a powerful standing pose that helps you connect with your legs and core, opens up the hips, and builds strength in your entire body. It’s one of those poses that feels strong and rooted, like you’re stepping right into your power.
Setting Up the Pose
Start in Mountain Pose (feet together, standing tall) at the top of your mat.
Step one foot back—about 3-4 feet behind you. This gives you a stable base.
Angle your back foot to about 45 degrees so it’s slightly turned out. Your front foot points forward.
Bend the front knee directly over your ankle. Keep the knee pointing forward, aligned with the center of your foot.
Square your hips and shoulders forward as much as possible. This part can be tricky, so take your time. It’s fine if they’re not completely squared!
Getting Grounded
Once your legs feel stable, press into the outer edge of your back foot and the entire sole of your front foot. This grounding action really connects you to the earth and helps you feel strong in the pose.
Reaching Up
From your solid foundation, lift your arms up toward the ceiling with your palms facing each other. Keep your shoulders relaxed and away from your ears. Imagine lengthening through your sides and lifting your chest—it’s like you’re reaching for the sky while staying rooted.
Common Tips for Warrior 1
Breathe! It’s easy to hold your breath, but keep it flowing. Inhale to lift and lengthen, exhale to ground.
Check your knee alignment. Avoid letting your front knee collapse inward.
If your lower back feels tight, try widening your stance or stepping the back foot out a little to give your hips some extra space.
Benefits of Warrior 1
This pose is fantastic for building leg strength, stretching the hips, and opening up the chest. Mentally, it’s an empowering stance. I love how it feels like you’re standing firm and confident, ready to take on anything.
